Popeye Village: for the young and the young at heart
Popeye Village, situated in Anchor Bay (Mellieħa), is the only still standing film set in all of Europe.
Built in 1979 for the musical movie POPEYE, is nowadays considered as a live tribute to the late Robin Williams, the actor who played the one eyed sailor – which, coincidently, was his first movie that made it to the big screen.
Nearly 40 years ago, this “village” didn’t even exist until Disney Productions decided to use the site near Mellieha as a film set for the musical movie.
The construction of the so-called Village, primarily named Sweethaven, was influenced by the comics of E.C. Segar and it is a village where Popeye comes back in hope of finding his father.
Today the village one of the major tourist attractions on the Maltese Islands filled with a number of colorful fun activities for all young and young at heart. Here you can meet characters such as Popeye, Olive and Wimpy, go on a boat trip around the village bay or watch various shows performed each day of the week!
